Description

Cullen Grummitt & Roe in association with WBM (materials handling), was commissioned by P&O Ports to update the Port Master Plan (1996-2000) for Port Amamapare on behalf of subsidiary PT Kuala Pelabuhan Indonesia. Port Amamapare is a private port which has been developed by P.T. Freeport Indonesia for the Grasberg (Freeport) mine in Irian Jaya, Indonesia.

P.T. Freeport extracts Copper and Gold from the Grasberg mine which is shipped through Port Amamapare. The port also handles significant volumes of import cargo for mine operations through a Coal Wharf (Power Station) and a Container and General Cargo Dock.

The new master plan addressed port issues for the period 2001 to 2015 with particular attention to the assessment of options for dredging the shallow river bed, construction of a new self loading vessel and upgrading or replacing existing infrastructure and materials handling equipment including the twenty year old fixed ship loader. As part of the update of the master plan, a small team visited the site to collect data and discuss options.
